MADRID: Real Madrid’s response to Barcelona winning the title was to lose to 19th-placed Rayo Vallecano on Sunday and fall 18 points behind La Liga’s newly-crowned champions. A deserved 1-0 defeat at Vallecas means Zinedine Zidane’s second term now shows four wins from eight games and a worrying lack of improvement since he returned as Madrid’s coach. Adri Embarba’s penalty, given after consultation with VAR, was enough for Rayo, who move to within six points of survival, with three games left to play.

Hales withdrawn from England WC squad
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
LONDON: England batsman Alex Hales will not feature at the World Cup after being withdrawn from all international squads following an off-field incident not related to cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board said on Monday.Hales was included in the 15-man preliminary World Cup squad for the tournament in England and Wales but it emerged last week that he had been sanctioned under the ECBs disciplinary policy for a second time. A report in the Guardian newspaper said the hard-hitting batsman was serving a ban from cricket for recreational drug use.A spokesman for Hales on Friday confirmed the Nottinghamshire batsman had been suspended “following an off-field incident last year”.An ECB statement on Monday said: “Alex Hales has been withdrawn from all England squads ahead of the international season.” Hales’ latest misdemeanour comes just a few months after he was suspended and fined by the ECB for his part in a street brawl in Bristol also involving Ben Stokes in September 2017. The 30-year-old has been stood down from this Friday’s one-off one-day international against Ireland in Malahide, the upcoming limited-overs matches against Pakistan and the World Cup. Hales has played 11 Tests, 70 one-day internationals and 60 Twenty20 internationals but is now regarded as a white-ball specialist.Meanwhile Alex Hales’s representatives said on Monday he was “devastated” by the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) treatment of the batsman after he was ejected from the preliminary World Cup squad. Hales’s management company, the 366 Group, said the player was “devastated” after assurances from the ECB were apparently “rendered meaningless”. It said in a statement: “We are hugely disappointed at the treatment of our client, Alex Hales, by the ECB.” Hales has played 11 Tests, 70 one-day internationals and 60 Twenty20 internationals but is now regarded as a white-ball specialist.Afghan squad upbeat ahead of WC: Afghanistan’s cricket team are upbeat about their chances at next month’s World Cup, skipper Gulbadin Naib said Monday, after the squad spent several weeks training in South Africa. Naib said conditions in South Africa, with bouncy wickets and good pitches, were similar to what they expect in Britain. Naib earlier this month was named as captain, replacing Asghar Afghan who has still been included in the squad. The move sparked some controversy coming so close to the World Cup, but the 28-year-old Naib dismissed the row as overblown, saying it was “no big deal” and that the team had several other players with captaincy experience.

ISLAMABAD: The recently-suspended Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Governing Board (BoG) member Numan Butt has again approached Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking disqualification of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani and Managing Director Waseem Khan. However with Board’s legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi says that PCB constitution allows such appointments.Numan while talking to The News said that he (Numan) in his petition, submitted with the august Court, has prayed that recently-appointed MD PCB Waseem Khan is a British national and under the Pakistan constitution has no right to get this appointment.Further there is no place for MD in the PCB constitution. Waseem Khan was also shown the door through a resolution during BoG meeting held in Quetta on April 17.Numan had further prayed that Chairman Ehsan Mani holds permanent residency of England and as such legally not eligible to get appointed on such a key post. “The PCB chairman is also acted unconstitutionally during the BoG meeting held in Quetta,” Numan said.Nauman said he in his petition has also prayed that Pakistan Super League (PSL) production rights were given in a hasty manner. The company that was rejected previously was given the rights within 24 hours. When The News approached Taffazul Rizvi, Legal Advisor PCB, he rejected all claims of Numan Butt saying that resolution was never tabled during the BoG meeting. The BoG members in question never attended the meeting once the resolution surfaced. In fact they walked out and shared the so called resolution with media rather than tabling it within BoG meeting.Taffazul Rizvi claimed there was no bar under the PCB constitution to hire a foreign national for any job. “All coaches and other technical staff we hire usually come from abroad. There are several examples where we hire foreign nationals for PCB job.” Taffazul Rizvi said for Waseem Khan, Quetta meeting was not his first rather he had already earlier attended BoG meetings also.

LAHORE: Pakistan allrounder Shoaib Malik will be unavailable for the only T20I against England in Cardiff on Sunday as he has been granted leave by the team management to return home to deal with a ‘personal issue’. He will also miss Pakistan’s second List A match which is against Northamptonshire and a T20 versus Leicestershire on Wednesday (May 1).In January 2018, Malik had to miss the three-match T20I series, which followed ODIs against New Zealand, after he was hit on his head by a throw while running between the wickets in the penultimate ODI of that tour. He also missed the first of the three T20Is against Australia in Abu Dhabi in October last year as his wife was expecting the birth of his first child. He recently turned out for Pakistan in a warm-up match against Kent and scored only four. The experienced batsman took the number six slot in that game - a position that the Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed expects the allrounder to bat at in the World Cup.

LONDON: Pakistan bowler Hasan Ali was at the centre of controversy after he claimed a catch despite apparently dropping the ball in their opening tour match against Kent. The tourists comfortably beat the county side by 100 runs after amassing 358 for seven in their 50 overs on Saturday. Kent were 176-3 in reply in the 30th over when Alex Blake, on 89, skied a return catch to Ali, who was bowling.Video footage emerged on Monday that showed the seamer appeared to floor the catch. But Ali continued his celebration as the ball lay on the ground and the batsman was not given a reprieve by the umpire. The laws of cricket state that a catch is completed only when “a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement”. The image of Pakistani cricket was damaged by a spot-fixing controversy that blighted their England tour in 2010, with three players handed bans from the game. Pakistan announced on Monday that veteran batsman Shoaib Malik has returned home to deal with a personal issue but is expected to rejoin the team in 10 days’ time.“The PCB will not be making any further comments and fully expects all concerned to respect Shoaib’s privacy,” the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement. Pakistan are playing one Twenty20 match and five one-day internationals against England before the start of the World Cup in late May.

Egypt´s rebounding tourism threatens Red Sea corals

Egypt´s rebounding tourism threatens Red Sea corals https://ift.tt/eA8V8J HURGHADA: In serene turquoise waters off Egypt´s Red Sea coast, scuba divers ease among delicate pink jellyfish and admire coral -- yet a rebounding tourism sector threatens the fragile marine ecosystem. The Red Sea is a top scuba diving destination, but Egypt´s tourism sector was buffeted by a wave of security shocks through much of this decade, before a partial recovery since 2017. A diving instructor in the town of Hurghada, a top resort, warned that the rebound brought dangers for the corals. Before the decline in visitors "there was way too much activity because it was so cheap" he said, asking to remain anonymous. "In some areas, they´ve disappeared -- although in others we see they´re coming back".The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says coral reefs are among "the most beautiful, biologically diverse and delicate ecosystems in the world".It describes these resources as vital to maintaining food supply and protecting the shorelines of low-lying island nations.Along the seafront in the town of Hurghada, bazaars and resorts offer unbeatable prices to attract budget-conscious European visitors to a country whose vital tourism sector was battered by a 2011 uprising and multiple jihadist attacks.Following the 2011 overthrow of longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak, tourist arrivals in Egypt plunged. The sector took a further beating in 2015, when jihadists blew up a Russian plane that took off from another major Red Sea resort, Sharm al-Sheikh, killing 224 people. But the contribution of Egypt´s tourism sector to GDP rose 16.5 percent last year to $29.6 billion (26.5 billion euros), the highest level since 2010, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. Egypt has not published its own official statistics for the year.German tourist Daniel, 29, said he was partly attracted to Egypt by the low prices."It´s a lot cheaper than the Caribbean," he said as he tanned his pale skin on a private beach in Hurghada. 'Tourism revival good'Flippers on their feet and air tanks on their backs, the mostly European tourists swim in tranquil waters just off Hurghada.Ten metres below the surface, clown and butterfly fish swim among green and purple corals. It´s "very beautiful," said an Estonian tourist as she clambered back onto the boat, her blond wet hair protruding from her black wetsuit.UNEP estimates that about 20 per cent of the world´s coral reefs have been destroyed and a further 60 per cent are under threat -- from climate change, overfishing and tourism. Many people who live close to reefs depend on them for a living, and Egypt´s resort towns are no exception.Scientists consider the Red Sea´s reefs the most climate change-resilient corals but say they are still under threat."The revival of tourism in Egypt is a good thing, but it has increased pressure" on the reefs, said Heba Shawky, managing director of the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association. The campaign group was founded in 1992 by diving professionals who were worried about the potential impact of mass tourism in the region.Around 1,700 tourist boats operate along Egypt´s Red Sea coast, according to the Red Sea province, while the Suez Canal Authority says 18,174 commercial vessels passed through the Suez Canal last year. Shawky said the NGO has set up around 1,200 buoys on various dive sites to prevent the use of anchors, which damage corals. But, she added, much remains to be done -- such as reducing the number and size of dive boats, which can be up to 50 metres (55 yards) long. "It´s about limiting the number of users per day to tackle the problem of the growing number of boats," Shawky said.General Ahmed Abdallah, governor of Egypt´s Red Sea province, agreed."We are making every effort to preserve the marine environment and stop any pollution affecting the reefs," he told AFP.Abdallah pointed to the absence of highly polluting industries such as steel, cement or ceramics production in the region. He also noted the province´s recent decision to ban single-use plastics, which are highly damaging to marine life.'Need to do more'With up to 12 million tonnes of plastic entering our oceans every year, the UNEP believes marine plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time."We are making a lot of effort, but we need to do more," said Mahmoud Hanafy, a professor in marine biology at Suez Canal University and an advisor to Shawky´s association. He urged authorities to declare some reefs protected sites to prevent them being "over-exploited".He also suggested following the lead of Australia and the Maldives by creating artificial reefs, sometimes with 3D printing, to ease the pressure on natural corals.Shawky contended that there is no contradiction between protecting the environment and supporting tourism.Unlike other parts of Egypt, "we don´t have pyramids or temples," she said."We have living resources under water. So by preserving the environment, we support the tourism industry."

US deputy attorney general who oversaw Mueller probe resigns

US deputy attorney general who oversaw Mueller probe resigns https://ift.tt/eA8V8J WASHINGTON: US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who chose Special Counsel Robert Mueller to lead the Russia interference probe and protected him from political intrusion, announced on Monday he is stepping down.In a letter to President Donald Trump, Rosenstein said he would depart on May 11, after more than two turbulent years as the number two official in the Department of Justice. The veteran Republican prosecutor, 54, stunned the country on May 17, 2017 when he named an independent lawyer to take on the Russia probe after Trump fired FBI director James Comey.Then-attorney general Jeff Sessions had already recused himself from overseeing the investigation, leaving Rosenstein in charge. That made Rosenstein effectively the one buffer between Mueller and the White House -- a position that became even more crucial when the investigation began examining whether Trump himself had obstructed justice by firing Comey and then trying to have Mueller fired. In his final report released on April 18, Mueller concluded that no one on Trump´s campaign conspired to collude with Russians. But he reached no conclusion on obstruction, detailing the evidence he had accumulated and leaving it to Congress to act.Rosenstein had made clear last year that he would step down after Mueller´s report was released. In his resignation letter he said the Justice Department had made "rapid progress" in reducing crime, protecting consumers, and enforcing immigration laws during his tenure.

US Army veteran detained for plotting mass attack in Los Angeles

US Army veteran detained for plotting mass attack in Los Angeles https://ift.tt/eA8V8J LOS ANGELES:   US authorities Monday said that they had thwarted a domestic terror plot by an American military veteran aimed at “multiple targets” in Southern California, including Huntington Beach, the port of Long Beach and the Santa Monica Pier.Mark Steven Domingo, 26, was arrested on Friday after he received what he thought was a live bomb, but in fact was an inert explosive device that was delivered by an undercover law enforcement officer as part of an investigation by the F.B.I’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. The suspect was allegedly plotting a terror attack near Los Angeles as revenge for the recent mass shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand.Mark Steven Domingo, who had combat experience in Afghanistan, faces federal terror-related charges for plotting to detonate an improvised explosive device (IED) at a  rally in Long Beach this past weekend with the aim of causing mass casualties, officials said."This investigation successfully disrupted a very real threat posed by a trained combat soldier who repeatedly stated he wanted to cause the maximum number of casualties," said United States Attorney Nick Hanna."Protecting Americans from terror attacks is the number one priority of the Justice Department, and anyone who plots to use a weapon of mass destruction will be held to account."

Video: Daesh chief Baghdadi appears for first time in five years

Video: Daesh chief Baghdadi appears for first time in five years https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Baghdad: The elusive chief of Daesh group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has purportedly appeared for the first time in five years in a propaganda video released Monday by the militant organisation. It is unclear when the footage was filmed, but the man said to be Baghdadi referred in the past tense to the months-long fight for Baghouz, Daesh´s final bastion in eastern Syria, which ended last month."The battle for Baghouz is over," the man said, sitting cross-legged on a cushion and addressing three men whose faces have been blurred. But he insisted that Daesh´s operations against the West were part of a "long battle," and that Daesh would "take revenge" on members who had been killed."There will be more to come after this battle," he said.Baghdadi, 47, had a long grey beard that appeared dyed with henna and spoke slowly, often pausing for several seconds in the middle of his sentences. He appeared for the first and last time in public in Mosul in 2014, where he declared "caliphate" in the swathes of territory Daesh then held in Syria and Iraq.He was reported killed or injured multiple times since then. His last voice recording to his supporters was released in August, eight months after Iraq announced it had defeated Daesh and as US-backed forces closed in next door in Syria.

Facebook to fund research on social media impact on elections

Facebook to fund research on social media impact on elections https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Washington: Facebook announced Monday its first research grants to academics studying the impact of social media on elections, part of an effort to prevent manipulation of social platforms. The leading social network said some 60 researchers from 30 academic institutions across 11 countries were selected under a review process by the Social Science Research Council and the independent group Social Science One.Facebook began the research initiative last year after revelations of foreign influence campaigns on the 2016 US election and the Brexit vote in Britain. It began soliciting proposals last year, and on Monday unveiled its first research grants."To assure the independence of the research and the researchers, Facebook did not play any role in the selection of the individuals or their projects and will have no role in directing the findings or conclusions of the research," said a blog post by Facebook executives Elliot Schrage and Chaya Nayak."We hope this initiative will deepen public understanding of the role social media has on elections and democracy and help Facebook and other companies improve their products and practices."The researchers will be granted access to Facebook´s internal data through a "first-of-its-kind data sharing infrastructure to provide researchers access to Facebook data in a secure manner that protects people´s privacy," Schrage and Nayak wrote."Some of these steps include building a process to remove personally identifiable information from the data set and only allowing researcher access to the data set through a secure portal."Gary King and Nathaniel Persily of Social Science One said in a statement the researchers will seek to move swiftly to help social networks improve their security and integrity."The urgency of this research cannot be overstated," they wrote."Elections in India are already underway, the European Parliamentary elections will take place in short order, and the US presidential primary campaigns have begun in earnest. Concerns about disinformation, polarization, political advertising, and the role of platforms in the information ecosystem have not diminished. If anything, they have heightened."Some of the research groups cited are based at Northeastern University, Ohio State University and New York University and Virginia Tech University in the United States; France´s Institute of Political Studies; National Chengchi University in Taiwan; Italy´s Universita di Urbino Carlo Bo; University of Sao Paulo in Brazil; Germany´s Technical University of Munich; the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands; and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.

Sri Lanka bans face covering after attacks

Sri Lanka bans face covering after attacks https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Colombo: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday announced a ban on face covering, a week after militants carried out coordinated suicide bombings that killed 253 people.Sirisena said he was using emergency powers to ban any form of face covering in public. The restriction will take effect from Monday, his office said in a statement."The ban is to ensure national security... No one should obscure their faces to make identification difficult," the statement said.It came days after local clerics urged Muslim women not to cover their faces amid fears of a backlash after the bombings carried out by militants  affiliated to the Daesh group.Muslims in the majority Buddhist nation account for about 10 percent of its 21 million population. Most Sri Lankan Muslims practise a liberal form of the religion and only a small number of women wear the niqab.

Sri Lanka suspends police chief over Easter attacks

Sri Lanka suspends police chief over Easter attacks https://ift.tt/eA8V8J COLOMBO: Sri Lanka´s president suspended the chief of police on Monday and appointed a new defence secretary in a shake-up of the shell-shocked country´s security services following the Easter Sunday terror attacks.Intelligence warnings from abroad alerting to possible attacks by Islamist extremists were ignored ahead of the multiple bombings of churches and upscale hotels on April 21 that killed 253 people and injured nearly 500.Chief of police Pujith Jayasundara had refused to quit to clear the way for a shake-up of the 85,000-strong force, prompting President Maithripala Sirisena to suspend him on Monday.Senior Deputy Inspector-General Chandana Wickramaratne was appointed acting police chief in his place, Sirisena´s office said in a statement.Separately Sirisena appointed on Monday a former head of the army, Shantha Kottegoda, as the country´s top defence official. His predecessor at the ministry of defence and law and order, Hemasiri Fernando, stepped down on Thursday in the wake of the attacks, which were claimed by the Islamic State group.General Kottegoda, 69, was forced to retire as head of the army in December 2005, by then-president Mahinda Rajapakse.Sirisena said an intelligence agency from a neighbouring country had provided precise details of the impending attack 17 days in advance, but local authorities had failed to take counter measures.Official sources said the president was referring to information provided by India´s Research and Analysis Wing which apparently gleaned details of the Easter attacks from a jihadist suspect in Indian custody. The government has since declared a state of emergency and deployed thousands of troops for search operations against Islamist extremists.Security forces searched a Muslim burial ground in Colombo Monday following information that explosives had been hidden there, but the troops did not find any, officials said. However, cordon and search searches were carried out across the country and 13 foreign nationals overstaying their visas were arrested, police said.It was not clear if the foreigners -- 10 Nigerians and one each from India, Iran and Thailand -- were linked to religious extremists or the Easter attacks.Over 150 people have been arrested since April 21 and more than 15 people killed in raids.

Iran drone video of American carrier appears ´years old´: US Navy

Iran drone video of American carrier appears ´years old´: US Navy https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Washington: Footage of an American aircraft carrier in the Gulf which Iran claimed it shot with a drone in the Gulf appears to be "several years old", the US Navy has said. The video was shot by a military drone, Iran´s Tasnim news agency claimed on Sunday in a report on its website, and published some of the imagery from the surveillance flight."The footage the Iranians recently released... appears to be several years old, and of the last deployment to the Arabian Gulf by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)," Lt. Chloe Morgan, US Naval Forces Central Command spokesperson, told AFP in an email. The video, which could not be independently verified, showed a light blue drone of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards taking off from a desert base near the sea, followed by imagery purportedly from its cameras of an escort ship and then an aircraft carrier with planes parked on the deck.Tasnim did not identify the vessels or say when the drone footage was shot, but in the video, the number "69" is seen clearly on the aircraft carrier. The report comes during nearly three weeks after Washington formally declared the Guards a "foreign terrorist organization" and added it to a blacklist.Iran retaliated swiftly by branding US troops "terrorists".The Guards are an ideological military force, operating in parallel to Iran´s regular army. Its naval arm is tasked with Gulf security, including the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a global shipping route routinely crossed by US forces.

Scot Pakistani Imtiaz Dharker to be poet laureate

Scot Pakistani Imtiaz Dharker to be poet laureate https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Imtiaz Dharker (L) with her daughter Ayesha DharkerLONDON: A Lahore-born Pakistani Scottish Muslim is expected to be named next month as the new poet laureate, replacing Carol Ann Duffy.Imtiaz Dharker, 65, would be the first Asian, Muslim or Pakistani person and second woman to become poet laureate in the position’s 350-year-long history. She has written about religion, identity, culture and feminism. She was born in Lahore to conservative parents but moved to live in Glasgow as a child and studied locally.Imtiaz Dharker’s daughter, Ayesha Dharker, 41, is a Shakespearean actress who also appeared in Coronation Street. On Desert Island Discs in 2015 Dharker said: “I am a Pakistani Scottish Calvinist Muslim, adopted by India and married into Wales . . . Don’t try to put me in a box . . . I’m a cultural mongrel.”The culture department said that an appointment has not yet been confirmed and the final decision will be taken by The Queen. It is understood that Dharker was chosen by the government to succeed Duffy when her ten-year term ends on April 30.According to The Sunday Times, London, a 15-strong search committee of “poetry experts” set up by Wright picked Imtiaz to succeed Duffy, whose term expires on April 30.Duffy, herself a member of the panel, had in the past praised Imtiaz for her “unique perspective in the diversity of English-language poetry”.“Whether Imtiaz Dharker writes of exile, childhood, politics or grief, her clear-eyed attention brings each subject dazzlingly into focus,” Duffy had said. “She makes it look easy, this clarity and economy, but it is her deft phrasing, wit and grace that create this immediacy.”Dharker was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2014, and is a former poet-inresidence at Cambridge University Library. Her first collection, Purdah, published in 1989, was titled after the Muslim and Hindu practice of keeping men and women separate.Dharker's work appears in GCSE and A-level syllabuses, and she speaks to more than 25,000 students a year in poetry recitals across the country. While giving one talk, she explained the origin of her poem Tissue. She noticed her father had written her date of birth on the tissue paper on the back of a book. While growing up in Scotland, Dharker has said that her Pakistani parents banned her from going out and dancing in the evenings, instead pushing her towards focusing on education. “I spent a lot of my time looking out over the city and the shining lights, and feeling as if all of life was happening somewhere else, somewhere out there, somewhere where I was not,” she said. She fell in love with an older man on the faculty of her university while studying, and the couple married and ran away to India shortly after Dharker's final exams, never to see her mother again. But following her divorce she would reconcile with her father and siblings, but Dharker said it is still 'too painful' to talk about it with them. She married journalist Anil Dharkar and shifted to what was then Bombay with her then husband Anil Dharker, who now runs literary festivals in Mumbai. Her second husband, Welshman Simon Powell, founded Poetry Live before his death in 2009 following a struggle with cancer.
