KARACHI: Departments on Tuesday did not give their thumbs up for the proposed model of domestic cricket, an insider told ‘The News’.During a meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) task force on domestic cricket and heads of 20 departments at Lahore a long debate was held on the merger of departments and regions. The task force, headed by WAPDA chairman Lt Gen (retd) Muzammil Hussain, briefed heads of the departments about the proposed model under which departments and regions would be merged.According to insiders, departments gave their opinion but the ultimate outcome of the meeting was that the departments were not in favour of the proposed merger. Sources said that all departments were of the view that the authorities should stick to the old model of domestic cricket in which regions and departments operate independently. The departments were of the view that the merger of the two different kinds of stakeholders would not only create employment issue for cricketers but it would also make the whole system highly complicated. The task force will meet the heads of the regions on Thursday (tomorrow) at the Punjab capital.A head of a department told ‘The News’ that departments always opposed the abolition of departmental cricket. He added the implementation of the proposed system would create a big mess.A source said that in the new system such a domain would be prepared in which both departments and regions would have their own roles. The sources said regions would also go against the proposed model in their meeting with the task force on Thursday. The regions and task force meeting was scheduled on Wednesday (today) but was postponed for a day.The sources said that Pakistan had an employment issue for sportspeople and the systems run in other countries were not feasible here. The task force wants merger of departments and regions in order to enhance the quality of the competitions.Under the proposed system eight teams would contest in first-class cricket and as many would fight in the second-tier cricket.
