ISLAMABAD: Islamabad City Short Marathon set to be held on March 24 has been dedicated to Armed Forces for their unprecedented exhibition of bravery in wake of enemies threats in recent time.Deputy Speaker National Assembly Qasim Suri announced details and purpose of the marathon at a press conference at Media Centre Pakistan Sports Complex Friday.“This marathon is being organised to pay tributes to forces for their bravery and success achieved against the enemy on all fronts. Be it air, sea or ground, our forces have shown unprecedented skills and bravery to thwart enemies all attempts, handing them exemplary defeat,” he said.The 5km short marathon for professional athletes will start from Kulsoom Chowk -7th avenue and would culminate at the footprints of Margalla Hills. Besides professionals, the 2km run has also been organised for ladies, parliamentarians, juniors and wheel chairs. “Friday is a women day and we want to celebrate that day also with the marathon,” Suri said.Brig (rtd) Tariq Zaman said with the marathon Pakistan want to spread message of peace. “We are a peace loving country and as such want to spread the message through the marathon which would be a regular yearly feature from here on.”He said foreign diplomats living in Islamabad would also be invited to flex their muscles.Nauman Shah, Street Smart president (organizers) said sports has always been the best medium to spread message of peace and brotherhood. “Sportsmen and women are the true ambassadors of the country.”Dr Aurangzeb, Government’s TB programme coordinator, reviled that March 24 also happened to be a World TB Day. “Thus this marathon importance has increased manifold.” Raja Nasir, chief organiser said that free tee shirts would also be distributed amongst participants. “Just Rs 50 is the entry fee and that is because of making the event more disciplined.”
