Resting 6 Pak players a big gambleBy Abdul Mohi ShahISLAMABAD: Pakistan selectors have taken a big gamble by resting six top players including captain Sarfraz Ahmad for the five-match one-day series against Australia starting with the opening match in Sharjah on March 22.As the team prepares for the World Cup starting in late May, selectors’ decision to announce a back-up squad for the series against powerful Australia raises many questions. A good number of cricketers who are selected in the team may not be in a position to earn a place on the team for the mega event-thus giving them exposure holds no sense.Secondly big rest in between international events means these cricketers will be requiring another couple of weeks to prepare themselves for the England tour. Such a lull period sometime takes away the form and fitness of a player. The past experience suggests that following a month or so lull period, Pakistan cricketers tend to get injuries like hamstring and torn muscle.Besides captain Sarfraz Ahmed, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi have been rested for the series against Australia. All are certain to make it to the World Cup. Some of the selected players including Abid Ali, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Abbas and Saad Ali have outside chances of selection on the team for World Cup.Pacer Mohammad Hasnain is the only notable inclusion in the team for the series against Australia. The pacer who has the ability to bowl at a pace of 150km has been given a chance to prove his talent at a bigger stage.Mohammad Hasnain has been identified as one of the fast bowlers for the future. The 18-year-old has shown tremendous control with the ball which has earned him crucial wickets in the ongoing HBL PSL.
