Top start for the gender equality index in large companies https://ift.tt/2tquErD Large French companies began Friday to publish their index of equality between men and women, aimed at reducing professional inequalities, a new thermometer accompanied by financial penalties.Companies with more than 1,000 employees - about 1,400 are concerned - have until midnight to publish their "index", a global score out of 100 broken down into five criteria. If the company falls below 75 points, it will take three years to improve the situation, otherwise it will go to checkout. It is expected that the penalty may go up to 1% of the payroll. In France, women are paid on average, all posts combined, 25% less than men. At equal position and age, the gap is 9% while the principle of equal pay for equal work has been written into law for 45 years.Between the partial times, the glass ceiling for positions of responsibility, the low mix of some jobs or the setting in the cupboard on return from maternity leave, the situation of women at work is not always rosy. The law "professional future" adopted in the summer of 2018 assigns to employers the objective of "closing the pay gap between women and men" and an obligation of transparency. The decree implementing the index was published in early January.Companies have now "an obligation of results", likes to repeat the Minister of Labor Muriel Penicaud. The five criteria making up the index are: the gender pay gap (scored out of 40 points), the gap in annual increases (20 points), the gap in promotions (15 points), the increases in return of maternity leave (15 points) and finally the presence of women among the highest salaries of the company (10 points).Quadrupling of controls Since Thursday, several companies have communicated.Like the luxury giant LVMH, whose overall score is 90/100, the railway manufacturer Alstom 95/100 or La Poste which points to 94/100. The steelmaker Arcelor-Mittal has published the rating for three of its entities: 89/100 for Atlantic and Lorraine, 83/100 for the Mediterranean and 73/100 for the subsidiary ArcelorMittal Industeel.Companies have the obligation to publish the overall rating, not all the criteria. Some have nevertheless chosen to publish the detail.Within companies, works councils (ECs) or the new social and economic councils (ESCs) that replace them can request the details of the rating. The Minister of Labor, along with Marlene Schiappa, Secretary of State for Equality between Women and Men, has planned to give some consolidated results Tuesday.According to a simulation of the Ministry of Labor, this new index will cover more than 80% of employees.Companies with fewer than 1,000 employees will benefit from more time to calculate their rating. Those with 250 or more employees have until September 1, 2019 and companies between 50 and 250 employees until March 1, 2020 to publish it.Within the Higher Council for Professional Equality, a "working group" will be responsible for drawing up a "calculator" for businesses, as well as a "methodological guide", to help especially the smallest companies. Those with less than 250 employees will apply an index with four criteria (merging the two criteria on the chances of increase and promotion). To enforce these new obligations designed to combat gender pay inequality, the executive plans to quadruple labor inspection controls.
