UK PM Theresa May vows to quit if her Brexit deal passed https://ift.tt/eA8V8J LONDON: British Prime Minister Theresa May has reportedly promised Tory MPs that she will quit if they back her Brexit deal."I am ready to leave this job earlier than I intended in order to do what is right for our country and our party," May told backbench Tories. The PM said she knew that Tory MPs did not want her to head the next phase of Brexit negotiations "and I won't stand in the way of that".If her deal is passed by MPs this week, Brexit will happen on May 22 -- but if not, she must return to Brussels before April 12 to explain what happens next.According to BBC, Boris Johnson has said he will now back the prime minister's deal. But the Democratic Unionist Party said they would not be dropping their opposition to it, the broadcaster, citing party sources, reported.Justice Secretary David Gauke has hoped Parliament would now "rally behind" the PM's deal, and he thinks "there is a mood in that direction".But Mrs May did not reveal the departure date at a packed meeting of the 1922 committee of backbench Conservative MPs.It is still unclear that if PM deal doesn't go through then Mrs May's offer to go still applies, although it is almost impossible, whether it stands or falls, that she would be able to stay. The prime minister hopes that by offering to leave Number 10, she'll take the country out of the EU with her, smoothly, without more political turmoil.Earlier, PM actively intervened to prevent possible ministerial resignations by allowing Conservative MPs a free vote when MPs pass judgment later on different Brexit plans, in the so-called indicative votes.MPs vote on alternativesAfter Theresa May´s refusal to change strategy, backbench MPs voted to stage their own series of votes which might set out an alternative plan. May´s cabinet ministers abstained.MPs were asked to vote yes or no to eight options -- but there was no majority for any of them.A plan for a new customs union with the EU after Brexit came closest, defeated by a slim margin of 272 votes to 264, but May has repeatedly ruled out this option.A proposal to put May´s deal, if agreed, to a "confirmatory" public vote also came close to passing, defeated by 295 to 268 votes -- a result that drew huge cheers in the Commons.Time has now been set aside on Monday for MPs to try and whittle down the most popular options -- however, the motions are not binding on May."There are no easy options here," Barclay said, adding: "I call on all members from across this house, in the national interest, to back the prime minister´s deal."In Thursday´s newspapers, May´s resignation offer was called "a stitch-up for a bad deal". And The Commons had descended into "total farce" after failing to back any alternative, while May "admitted she has lost control".
