KARACHI: Cricketers and officials of departments and regions have been disappointed by the reports that PM Imran Khan wants the domestic cricket to have only six city-based teams in first class cricket.A departmental cricket source told 'The News' on condition of anonymity that ZTBL has already sent its 25 cricketers to do regular jobs at different desks. It is also reported that it had fired a number of cricketers in the recent past because of uncertainty about departmental cricket teams.Another source, requesting not to be named, said that the team of a major bank based in Karachi was going to be closed. "The authorities of the bank have hinted at closure of the team," he added. The PM out-rightly rejected the plan of merging departments and regions put forward by PCB's director domestic Haroon Rasheed. The PM has directed the PCB chairman Ehsan Mani and MD Waseem Khan to make changes to the domestic structure following the system in Australia.Pakistan’s domestic cricket season 2019-20 is to start from September. The PCB chiefs Mani and Waseem will have to work out a system before that according to the wishes of the PM."It will be a tough test of PCB MD Waseem Khan to formulate a new first-class cricket system and implement it, especially in the circumstances when departments and regions both have opposed the changes to the country’s existing system," a source said.It is pertinent to mention here that director domestic Haroon Rasheed has been involved in the making of two or three domestic cricket structures tested in the recent past. But this time PM Imran Khan, himself one of the greatest cricketers, rejected a plan made by him.The PM reportedly told Haroon Rasheed in the meeting that he had played cricket for 40 years and he did not need any briefing on cricket. The cricket officials of departments have said they were ready to play Grade-II cricket, but this idea did not find favour with the PCB planners. The current domestic cricket season 2018-19 will end in the first week of May when Grade-II cricket championship will be completed.
